Coronavirus and Support for Employers
Many employers have been hit hard by coronavirus and the government measures that have been put in place to fight it. With some organisations experiencing massive reductions in demand / customer numbers employers can find themselves facing some tough decisions regarding their employees. Employers may also be finding that the high instances of sickness absence – whether through actual illness itself or employees self-isolating in accordance with public health advice – is putting a strain not only on operations but on finances.
With this in mind, we wanted to remind employers that there is some government financial support in place for employers. Information regarding this can be found here covid-19-support-for-businesses
However, for many employers and employees, the current support clearly does not
go far enough. There have understandably been demands for further government help, particularly where employers are faced with laying off staff.
In the Prime Minister’s daily update yesterday, he said that the Chancellor would be announcing a new package of support for workers and businesses today. At the time of writing, no government hints had been given as to what the package of support might be. We will of course keep you updated regarding any developments from an employment law perspective.
