The Twelve Days of Christmas Day 9: I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas….
…Or maybe re-writing a to-do list or just making (another!) quick cup of tea before you get started, yes we are talking about procrastination in the workplace!
It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of putting off those tasks that you don’t really want to do, after all who wants to go out in the middle of the night in the cold and dark to shove themselves down a chimney (even if you do have magic reindeer as a perk of the job!) But you can drive yourself Christmas crackers by procrastinating so here’s our recipe to help you stop putting off ‘til tomorrow what you can (begrudgingly!) do today:
- You (probably) wouldn’t eat a whole turkey in one go, the same applies to other big projects! Carve the task into more manageable slices – it makes it less daunting and easier to squeeze into your working day. Set yourself different ‘sittings’ to power through so it’s easier to see the progress you have made.
- Get going with a little taster – depending on the task this could be as simple as opening a word document and writing an opening paragraph. Often starting is the hardest part, once you’ve managed that you will be merrily on your way!
- Leave room for pudding – be kind to yourself and set an earlier deadline than you need. If you finish by then you should be proud of ‘your’elf’, if not you’ll still have enough time for some last minute finishing touches or to deal with the unexpected without feeling too snowed under!
