To try to reduce pressure on doctors, particularly GP’s, changes come into force today (1st July 2022) to allow a wider group of healthcare professionals to certify and issue ‘fit notes’. The changes mean that registered nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists can also do this.

The government believes that the expansion will enable patients to see the most relevant healthcare professional and have better conversations about work and health. They have also said that “the change will be delivered in general practice and hospital settings”.

What should we do now?

Ensure that the relevant people in your business are aware of the development in case they receive a fit note administered by one of the newly authorised healthcare professionals.

You should also check your sickness and other relevant policies as an update may be needed to reflect the change. For help with this please get in touch.
