With temperatures set to rise over the coming days, arriving sooner than many anticipated, some workplaces may find themselves underprepared for the impact of hot weather.

Now is the time to take a fresh look at how heat can affect your workforce. It is not just about comfort; higher temperatures can directly impact safety, concentration, and overall performance, increasing the risk of incidents.

A few simple, proactive steps can make a significant difference in keeping your teams safe, comfortable, and productive.

Beat the Heat – Practical Steps That Work

    Rethink the Working Day

Where possible, start earlier and finish earlier (or shift hours altogether) to avoid the most intense midday heat. Cooler working hours equals safer, more productive teams.

    Work Smarter, Not Harder

Plan demanding or high-risk tasks for the cooler parts of the day and ease off during peak heat. Task rotation can also help reduce prolonged exposure.

    Hydration is Key

Encourage workers to drink little and often, not just when thirsty. Make sure cool drinking water is easily available, and remind teams that hydration directly impacts focus and safety.

    Take 5 (Often)

Build in regular rest breaks in shaded or cool areas. Short, frequent breaks are far more effective than pushing through the heat.

    Dress for the Weather

Allow for lightweight, breathable clothing where safe to do so. Review PPE options to ensure they are suitable for warmer conditions without compromising protection.

    Working Outdoors? Protect Your Skin

Encourage the use of high factor suncream (SPF 30+), along with hats and UV protection where appropriate. Sun exposure is not just a comfort issue; it is a serious long-term health risk.

    Look Out for Each Other

Train supervisors and teams to recognise early signs of heat stress, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, confusion. Encouraging people to speak up early can prevent serious issues.

    Do Not Forget Indoor Teams

Improve airflow with ventilation, fans, and shading. Even indoors, temperatures can quickly become uncomfortable and unsafe.

    Assess Risk

Regulations require employers to undertake suitable and sufficient risk assessments. Consider the specific working environment and work activities in conjunction with the duration of exposure.

    Why It Matters

Heat does not just impact comfort, it affects decision-making, reaction times, and overall safety performance. If left unmanaged it can lead to accidents, absenteeism, and reduced productivity.

It is ultimately a workplace hazard which should be considered in the same way as any other significant risk under health & safety legislation. Where high temperatures have the potential to affect employee health, safety, and wellbeing, employers are expected to assess the risks and implement reasonably practicable control measures.

As temperatures increase, it is important that heat is actively considered within existing risk assessment processes and day-to-day management arrangements, rather than being treated as a separate or temporary issue. Taking action now shows your commitment to protecting your people and helps ensure your operations continue running smoothly.
