A property management firm responsible for three Lancashire Jobcentres advised the Department for Work and Pensions that a small Christmas tree was fine as long as new lights, either with a 12-month warranty or tested in the past 12 months, were used.

The verdict

It is important to make sure that your lights are safe before switching them on, but this can usually be done with a visual check. Before switching on your lights, you need to ensure that there is no damage to the bulbs or cable, such as frayed wiring. If your lights look damaged in any way, do not use them.
